Bad Odor

Bad odor or “rotten egg” smell is commonly caused by sulfur in your water supply. Common forms of sulfur in your drinking water are Sulfate and Hydrogen Sulfide. Both forms can be irritating and quite bothersome. Although neither forms a health risk at concentrations found in domestic wells, they can cause serious damage to your water distribution system.

Sulfate
A combination of sulfur and oxygen, it is part of naturally occurring minerals in some soil and rock. Over time, the minerals dissolve and are released into ground water. Sulfate found in your water can:

• Give water a bitter taste and may have a laxative effect that leads to dehydration.
• Causes scale buildup in pipes causing clogging
• Produce a dark slime in water
• Stain clothing

Hydrogen sulfide
Produced by sulfur-reducing bacteria that live in oxygen-deficient environments such as deep wells, plumbing systems, water softeners and water heaters. The sulfur-reducing bacteria use sulfur as an energy source. The bacteria chemically change natural sulfate in water to Hydrogen Sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide gas can also occur naturally in some ground water, found in deep or shallow wells. Hydrogen sulfide often is present in wells drilled in shale or sandstone, or near coal or peat deposits or oil fields. Hydrogen Sulfide found in your water can:

• Alter the taste and discolor beverages made with water
• Corrode metals such as iron, steel, copper, and brass
• Blacken silverware and discolor brass and copper utensils
• Cause yellow or black stains on kitchen and bath fixtures
• Stain clothing
• When combined with iron and manganese turns water black and greasy-feeling
